How to establish purple passion fruits orchard:

Passion fruit production is constrained by several insect pests, diseases and inadequate knowledge on the management of the crop among other factors. A grower needs to know a few basic facts about the crop.

The two types of commercially grown passion fruit.

1) The purple passion (Passiflora edulis f. edulis) This type of passion fruit is most suited to upper midland

and highlands (1,100 to 2,500m above sea level). It has purple colored superior fruits of 4-5 cm in diameter

which have an aromatic flavor. It is good for fresh market and Juice extraction for local and export markets

2) Yellow passion fruit (Passifl ora edulis f. fl avicarpa) This passion fruit is most suited to the coastal lowlands. It is more vigorous and has a larger fruit of 5-7cm. It is more acidic and used for juice extraction. Yellow passionfruit is resistant to Fusarium; wilt, tolerant to Phytophthora blight, nematodes and brown spot.

Grafting will reduce tomato bacterial wilt:

Tomatoes are one of the widely grown vegetables in the world. In Uganda, it is estimated that about three million homesteads grow tomatoes, some for home consumption and others, for sale.

Speaking at the launch of a key turning innovation, where tomatoes are grafted to keep away pests including the deadly wilt locally known as kiwotoka. The tomato wilt is the devil that threatens to destroy the souls of the tomato growers.

When we are planting our tomatoes, we pray that they are not visited by this devil, John Nsamba, a tomato farmer says. Nsamba grows tomatoes in Busiika in Luwero district. The wilt destroys tomato farms if infected plants are not isolated and identified early. Farmers want the right seeds and knowledge to achieve better yields and eliminate diseases, Karugu Macharia, the regional director of Solidaridad says.

For the plants to be grafted and to remain healthy, they should be watered the previous night so that when cut or graft

How to plant trees that survive

Mintesenot Urban Agriculture, Kasanchis - Kebena, AA

Tree Planting, Songs by the Ethiopia Environment Protection Club and Launching of the Surviving Tree Project!

The survival rate of trees planted from seedlings from some local tree seedling nurseries is estimated to be as low as 20% in the first 1-2 years after planting. The Surviving Tree Project seeks to promote the survival of planted tree seedlings through knowledge, and a competition in which the team of tree planters with the highest rate of tree survival get a cash award. (The design for this competition is inspired by the incentive scheme practiced by Wangari Maatha's Green Belt Movement).

The launch of the surviving tree project will take place at Mintesenot Urban Agriculture, an integrated farm on the Kebena River of Addis Abeba, that is run 100% by youth members creating jobs, healthy food and promoting environmental protection in their community.
