Business opportunities & “wacky” solutions for strengthening nutrition at the BoP

What can be done to support the consumption of more healthy food products by the poorest people in low- and middle-income countries, the people at the so-called “Bottom of the Pyramid” (BoP)? That is an urgent challenge, given the fact that globally 155 million children are still stunted, 52 million children are wasted, and 2 billion people lack key nutrients like iron and vitamin A1

This challenge is addressed by several actors in these countries and their international partners. Small, medium and larger enterprises from different sectors are those who use market-based solutions to produce, distribute and sell nutritious food products to consumers. In addition, NGOs and the public sector also contribute to tackling the different forms of malnutrition, including in countries with emergencies.

A tool for responsible business practice among SMEs- The Online Roadmap for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

About the CSR Online Roadmap

The Online CSR Roadmap is a user-friendly online tool to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) in developing a CSR action plan. The Online CSR Roadmap helps understand and break down sustainability issues such as human rights, environmental impact, labour practices, fair operating practices, customer interest, supply chain responsibility, impact on local communities and governance. The overarching goal is to create awareness among SMEs regarding the importance of CSR and create a plan based on their strengths and weaknesses. Companies that complete the tool end up with two concrete outcomes: 1) a CSR action plan enabling them to work on various important CSR aspects, and 2) a communication poster, which helps them to demonstrate their CSR performance and ambitions to their stakeholders.
