By providing information and advice on business start-up procedures, available resources of finance, technology and manpower and in some cases office space and facilities at a low rent, business hubs can support women-led start-ups through the tricky early stages. In many cities around the world, business hubs are popping up and providing support to (especially young) women to kick-start their own businesses. However, in rural areas business hubs are less frequently seen. In addition, most existing business hubs do not take gendered differences in terms of access, barriers and opportunities into account. What types of services could support rural women in the start-up and development of their business? Who will run/host a rural business hub? And how will it be financed?
These questions are currently being explored by the programme team of the ‘Enhancing Opportunities for Women's Enterprises’ programme. The programme is being implemented between 2016 and 2020 in Kenya and Vietnam with fun... Read more

On Friday February 9, Marjolijn Sonnema, Director General of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality visited the AgriProFocus office in Utrecht. She was curious to find out more about our network; who are our members, what drives us and how can the ministry and AgriProFocus work more together on agriculture and food security?
We wanted to present the broad variety of members and activities of our network. We invited members in Utrecht and set up a live video connection with Uganda and Benin. Our coordination teams there had invited network members and partners that are involved in the Benin “Uplifting the Fish Value Chain in Benin” program and in the Uganda PAINT program, two strong examples of how AgriProFocus facilitates Dutch, national and international partners to work together on common goals and agendas.
Thanks to the live connection a lively discussion sparked between the guests in Utrecht, Uganda an... Read more

This scan was presented and discussed during a seminar hosted by PPPLab on 30 November 2017 in the Netherlands. The notes of the presentations and discussion are presented below.
Introduction - Jan Ubels and Floortje Jacobs (SNV)
Scaling is needed for a variety of reasons: reaching more people, higher efficiencies, achieving system change. A new scan to assess the potential for scaling was developed by PPPLab, and it includes 5 key concepts:
1. Delivery mechanisms. It is about the delivery mechanism(s) for a range of elements that enable the adoption and sustainability of the improved solution or practice (so, not the technical solution only). So it is not what you scale, but how you scale it.
2. Horizontal and vertical scaling. Horizontal : rolling out, replication to as many people as possible. Vertical scaling, is about the other system levels (solution, organization... Read more

I have read through a report prepared after SNV’s Smart water for Agriculture (SWA) learning event that took place on 18 September 2017 in Nairobi Kenya; it is clear new technologies in water harvesting, storage, and usage would lead to transformation of lives. This new knowledge and technologies if embraced would lead to eradication of poverty and ensure food security.
In the report one thing is evident – change of tact in SWA programs is necessary if we have to achieve SDGs No. 1,2 &13 . According to National irrigation Board (NIB) in Kenya, The government is re-looking into policies that have existed on irrigation, which have not borne fruits with intention of instituting changes. In fact the government is now seeking to empower and encourage private sector as strategic partners to take a bigger role in spearheading smart Water Agriculture technologies and practices.
Given that Agriculture is a devolved function in Ken... Read more
Voice for Change partnership launch was held on the 29th of September 2017 at the Sarova Panafric Hotel. Mr Irungu Houngton, the Executive Director of Chapter One Kenya while giving his perspective on the role of CSOs in development noted that civil society organizations are at the front seat of the country's future as they point out issues that are not protecting the rights of citizens. He further noted that CSOs are at the voice of citizens at the local, national and intern... Read more
Download SNV Uganda 2016 Annual report for detailed insights into SNV's performance in 2016.
It is clear through available statistics that by 2050 the world population would be over 9 billion and the biggest challenge would be food insecurity. The premonition, if we don’t act on the looming food crisis, many people are going to die of hunger. From human point of view and indeed Africa tradition, dying of hunger is not only painful but also shameful. It is imperative then for everyone to commit to work in order to avert the pain and shame of the encroaching calamity.
The urgency of the solutions to this peculiar problem of food insecurity especially in Africa cannot be underrated. From several researches, it is clear that the Africa continent has latent pote... Read more
The Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) is conducting an edible oil demand study in Northern Uganda in order to understand the market demand for distinct products from edible oil seeds such as sunflower oilseed, soya beans, palm oilseeds, sesame/simsim and other oilseeds. The questions below will provide the understanding required of the edible oil demand in the country. This survey is confidential and voluntary, and any information that we obtain will only be used anonymously, for the study purposes. We will be most grateful if you could take about 8 minutes of your time to answer the questions
