SNV Uganda and Dairy Development Authority (DDA) have launched the first ever Practical Dairy Training Farms (PDTFs) in South Western Uganda.

The initiative is part of the four-year Inclusive Dairy Enterprise (TIDE) project that SNV is implementing in the districts of Bushenyi, Isingiro, Kiruhura, Mbarara, Ntungamo, and Sheema in South Western Uganda with funding from the Netherlands Embassy.

“I am very happy that dairy farmers are paying to learn. This is the way to go if we want to increase our productivity and add value to our businesses. Instead of travelling to Kenya and other countries to learn, SNV and Dairy Development Authority have opened three dairy training centres of excellence for the region. We should take advantage of this opportunity to learn how to add value to our products. I thank SNV and DDAfor this great initiative.” Hon. Joy Kabatsi, State Minister for Animal Industry said during the launch of the PDTFs in Mbarara. Through the project, SNV and its partners aim to s

Climate change, satellites and pastoralists

For thousands of years, the life of a pastoralist in Africa has barely changed. They travel from one place to another to find water and pastures for their herds, and to find markets that offer good prices for their animals — using traditional routes which they and their ancestors have used time and time again.

But what happens when these routes are no longer abundant with pastures and fresh water due to climate change? What happens when conflict makes it too dangerous to travel traditional journeys? Or if encroachment of farm land leads to enhanced fragmentation of grazing areas?

Knowing where best to travel with their herd is crucial for the livelihood of a pastoralist. However, this information is usually passed on by word-of-mouth and can sometimes be inaccurate or limited in its geographical reach.

This is where satellite and mobile technology can come into play, bringing the pastoralists' traditional way of life well into the 21st century.

Kenya highland seeds and SNV in colaboration with AgriPro Focus held a successful farmers field day at Keses - Uasin Gishu county on the 13th of September 2016.There was excitement and smiles at the event. The positive outcome in the outlook for the event had a huge impact on its success with a good record number of exhibitors and also a great number of visitors (farmers) attending which was more than the gate number that was expected.
The main objective of the field day was to educate farmers on how to use agribusiness to better their lives. They were mainly taught on greenhouse site selection and setup, cabbage growing, chemical selection and application and the process of growing tomatoes from nursery stage to harvesting .

Agriculture is still a lucrative business

The story of one 'tin' farmer's journey to becoming a millionaire

“Who am I that today I can earn a million shillings from my farming; have my own goat and food all year round with children comfortably in school? Thank you SNV." says Judith Tusiime, rural farmer working with Agriculture Market Support programme.

Rural poverty and rural development are two concepts that have dominated the development agenda for a very long time. While poverty levels have been falling globally, the poor are still trapped in a mesh of disadvantage. Until the knots that keep the poverty mesh strong are identified and loosened, the rural poor will remain trapped in what Robert Chambers (1983) refers to as the deprivation trap. Chambers provides a description of the rural poor. To him; the household is poor with few or no assets; the household is physically weak with a high ratio of dependents to able bodied adults; the household is isolated from the outside world

A New Breed of Entrepreneurs!

AgriProFocus Zambia and its partners held its first Youth in Agribusiness Event from 1st - 3rd September. Our goal was simple: to link aspiring and current youth agripreneurs with each other and stakeholders in the sector to learn, share and grow.

It was a small event with a big goal, and even bigger potential to grow into a movement that would help harness our youth to grow the sector, and Zambia. Over 100 youths and 10 organisations participated in the event.

The event comprised of presentations, panel discussions, a hackathon (using ICT for Agriculture), testimonials and a business case competition.

A special thank you to Young Emerging Farmers Initiative (YEFI), Oxfam, BongoHive, Agricomm, Agriterra, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, COMACO, and UNZA for their contributions towards making this event a success.

Mugisha Richard This event was very unique in the History of AgriProFocus. We had only expected 300, but we were overwhelmed by the huge turn of up to 453 participants. What stood out uniquely was out 453 youth that attended the event, 281 (60%) were female participants.

Mugisha Richard During the finance fair event in Arua, it came out so clearly that; the money which the Government channels through commercial Banks targeting youth does not actually reach the target beneficiaries. It was further revealed that, even when youth make an effort to approach these banks for these Government funds (an example was the Youth capital venture fund), they are instead advised to go for business loans with all the associated complex requirements and high interest rates of not less than 25%. As such, youth have decided to ignore the Government funds, saying they are not accessible at all. The question is, what solutions is Government putting in place to address these bottlenecks?

More updates from the farmer field days!

In my opinion, agribusiness is the future for Kenya's development and growth, and needs to be supported. AgriProFocus and SNV organised farmers field days on the 3rd and 9th August in Kieni West - Gatarakwa in Nyeri County and Olkalao-Kanjuiri Ridge in Nyandarua County respectively.

The field days showcased the latest in technological advancements in field crop production. Step by step technologies on farming were introduced to the local farmers who attended the event in large numbers.
Royal Seeds  Ltd, one of the exhibitors taught and demonstrated to the farmers on how to setup a greenhouse and how to grow tomato crops from nursery stage to harvesting in the greenhouse. Koppert, another exhibitor, taught and demonstrated to the farmers on how to use and implement crop chemicals for pest and disease control which was very helpful to the farmers.

Equity Bank attended the farmers field day in Olkalau-Nyandarua county and educate

"Agribusiness is the future of Kenya." This are the words of the famous Kenyan billionaire Mr. Chris Kirubi.

Working with Agri Pro Focus in partnership with SNV has helped me realise the truth in those words.

In Laikipia County, Umande Ward a few days ago I got to see how extensive Kenyan Agriculture is. Umande which is on the leeward side of Mount Kenya doesn't get much rainfall yet it had farmers who were working hard to make a living in the area. Some had created very innovative make shift dams where they had stored water which they used to irrigate their farms.

Farmers in the area got to go through training where they were informed on hybrid seeds and soil diseases by service provides such as Royal Seed/Kenya Highland seeds Company and Koppert Biological Systems respectively. Farmers also got to know more about the cost of setting up of greenhouses from Illuminum greenhouses an Agritech Greenhouse and drip irrigation company. The field day event was also attended by the Food and Agricult

Research Study on Dairy Lobby Issues in Zambia

The dairy industry is a source of livelihood for all year round income to small scale farmers as well as emergent and large scale farmers. The Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) and Dairy Association of Zambia (DAZ) received complaints from dairy farmers and processors alike from most parts of the country that the dairy market had suddenly slowed down and processors were finding it difficult to sell their dairy products because demand for local dairy products had slumped with some processors experiencing sales that were half to their usual trends.

DAZ members brought these issues to the foreground during the Regional Dairy Debate Platform held in March in  Monze hosted by DAZ , SNV and AgriProFocus. The main issues highlighted were:

High cost of production – there is need to come up with ways of how to bring down the cost of production per litre of milk and improve negotiation skills for milk prices between farmers and processors.
