Sustainable Palm Oil - Indonesia

SNV is taking up the challenge to increase palm oil production and improve smallholder farmers' livelihoods without further fueling the destruction of forests. SNV uses a three-fold approach: tracebility & forest monitoring; inclusive business for smallholder farmers; and working across the landsape.

A short video on this approach is available on YouTube, follow the link below.

The video was also shown during the Forum of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) in June 2016, as one of the Innovator's pitches.

If you have never been to Kenya, then now is the time to be here. The scenery, the culture, the people. All amazing. This being a conclusion I made having been brought up in this country.

I have, for the past few weeks, been working with SNV and AgriProFocus Kenya and through them, I have also got the chance to interact with various citizens of my country, especially the farmers. Having traveled to Njoro, Limiru and Kuresoi I have discovered that Kenya is a hardworking nation.

The HortImpact project has been of great impact in the sites we have been able to visit. Farmers at a farm site in Mauche  were enlightened on the benefits of greenhouse farming. In comparison to the other field sites,  this site had the greatest turn out of farmers who went through the entire HortImpact training. The youth formed a larger composition of the trainees.

The interaction between one of the attending youth group's chairman was most enthusiastic. He passionately gave me stories of his locale

Training and educating on the best agricultural practices that promise high output was the top agenda for AgriProFocus and SNV at the agricultural farmers field day that was held in Mauche ward - Njoro sub county in Nakuru county on the 20th of July 2016.

The field day attracted a great number of farmers and exhibitors from different agricultural sectors some of which included Koppert, Syngenta EA, SGS (K) Ltd, Agrico East Africa and also Equity bank who provided free professional training and information to farmers on how to get easy access to finances for investment as far as agribusiness is concerned.

According to the farmers that we interviewed who attended the training, they could clearly see the positive outcome the product they had been trained on had on their crop produce. Children from a local primary school also attended the field day where they were taught on different agricultural practices which could help them become professional farmers in the future.

The field day was a success

Tanzania Poultry Sector will not be the same again!

It is common practice in Tanzania for people to replicate what a neighbour or friend is doing. And it’s very common in the poultry sector. Poultry keepers just learn from each other. Rarely do they get expert advice. Thanks to AgriProFocus Tanzania and its members SNV, MVIWATA and US Grain Council, for a big transformation in the sector.

3 poultry labs were organized in Arusha and Dar es Salaam. The labs consisted of farm visits and a training offered by a PUM expert Mr.Joost. Please find the report of the poultry learning labs attached.

Taking the Dairy sector in Kenya to the next level!

In May 2013,just a month after joining the network, i shared with one of our member organisations - SNV - dairy advisor about this innovative company in the Netherlands that i knew that offers dairy training courses at farm level - Cowsignals.  At the time it was a discussion around the corridors of whether there is a demand for such services in Kenya. SNV and its Dairy program have been working alot with Dutch expertise to improve the dairy sector at production and market and with a market led approach. Focus on quality is key but also with interventions on fodder to improve productivity. So this introduction at the time was to explore areas of synergy with their existing engagements.

Proud to say the corridor discussion after three years has culminated in the development of CowSignals East Africa edition.  This is the 35th translation/adapted edition of the CowSignals book. The whole content has been revised and adapted to East Africa. Close to 100 illustrations have been changed with illu

AgriProFocus Network Results 2015: Finance Fairs

Example: Mbale, Uganda

The Regional Finance Fair was organized with the Hunger Project, AMFIU, GIZ, SNV, Feed the Future, VECO and Financial Access. It attracted close to 400 participants and 30 exhibitors. A pre-event for 40 producer organisations increased their preparedness and confidence to interact with financial service providers. 15 of them made deals with Centenary Bank, Opportunity Bank and Pride Micro-Finance.

Since 2013 AgriProFocus collaborates with GIZ and Bank of Uganda to disseminate the Finance Year Book. The book features sub-sector oriented developments and information on the development of the agri-sector in general including access to finance.

During the Mbale finance fair, half of the first day was dedicated to disseminating this information in the form of a workshop.

Should we stop talking about “youth”?

16 May 2016

Youth and young people are becoming a hot topic among development donors and actors. But who exactly do these "labels" apply to, and are they too broad for effective policies? Or do they create too narrow a focus which is blind to larger structural issues?

Varyingly, "youth" are being identified as "at risk” – of unemployment, of marginalisation or abuses – or “as risk”, where they may engage in undesirable activities from crime to terrorism, armed violence or migration. However, there are also many calls to understand youth “as opportunity” (PDF), particularly in the context of Africa’s “youth bulge” and its promise of a vast demographic dividend.

A recent visit to the Dutch Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) and some great discussions with research colleagues there, brought some clarity into the interlinked promises and problems arising from development actors’ burgeoning interest in youth and work. Cl

The awakening of sleeping giants

17-05-2016

In Ethiopia, farmer cooperatives and unions fulfil a very limited role in collective output marketing and processing of their members’ produce. Only 5-10% of the available produce is collected and marketed or processed through cooperatives and their unions. As both the government and various other stakeholders like companies and research institutes have identified their marketing potential as enormous, they clearly seem to be the sleeping giants of the Ethiopian agricultural sector.

Cooperatives for Change

The Cooperatives for Change (C4C) project, a joint SNV Ethiopia and Agriterra project, aimed to improve the business performance of agricultural cooperative unions and their member cooperatives. C4C seeks to establish innovative changes to rein

AGRIBUSINESS - THE BRIDGE TO YOUTH’S SUCCESS

Tanzania just as other countries in Africa has the youngest population and each year, thousands if not millions of young people enter the country’s workforce without success. This highlights the great challenge of youth unemployment but also seen as an opportunity for them to engage in agriculture and agribusiness, a sector commonly termed as the villagers’ job. Which sounds less interesting in Swahili – Kazi ya kishamba. Good news is, the youth are now eager to join the sector with vigor and ambition. Thanks to various initiatives such as SNV Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE) that arouses the interest of youth and keeps them sustainable.

In their quest to expose employment opportunities to youth in Agriculture, SNV OYE, Agriterra and AgriProFocus joined forces on 13th and 14th May 2016 and organized a Youth Roadshow in Arusha Tanzania aimed at exposing youth to various opportunities available in agriculture and agribusiness. Th

Successful FSRE Learning Event on Horticulture

Challenges and Opportunities

Today - April 14, 2016 - an interesting learning event, which brought together important stakeholders in the horticulture sector in Ethiopia, took place at Dreamliner Hotel, Addis Ababa.

The objective of the event was to provide a learning opportunity for the 4th round FSRE Fund Innovation Grant winner projects. AgriProFocus who is responsible in organizing FSRE Fund Learning Events for projects being supported by the Fund has recently taken a new approach – connecting projects with similar value chains for a better understanding of common challenges and opportunities. Accordingly, a few months ago a Learning Event for poultry projects was organized.

Today’s event focused on horticulture. To meet the objective, a number of horticulture development stakeholders from both the Government and private sector, as well as from NGOs, were part of the learning event. The diversity of the 26 participants has playe
