Meet Remy Rutayisire: A university student on a mission to build a livestock business empire

Jean Remy Rutayisire is quite different from most youths. Unlike the majority of young men and women who find agriculture unattractive, Rutayisire says that this is an industry that has fascinated him since his childhood.

Desperate to raise money to start up an agricultural project, the Chief Executive Officer of the Muhanga based Urugwiro Poultry Farm Ltd took up a part-time job in photography in 2015. Since he was a high school student by then, he was only able to work during holidays, earning a daily wage of Rwf2,000.

He used some for his pocket money at school and saved the rest. By December last year, he had saved up to Rwf200,000—inadequate to see him venture into a significant farming project.

He was looking for Rwf2 million. However, efforts to mobilise capital from friends and relatives were unsuccessful. With his meagre savings, he decided to start a small poultry farm. o his

How a WhatsApp group is demystifying goat marketing:

The Goaters Network was opened on March 17, 2015. It was soon inundated by frustrated goat farmers. From the onset, group conversations tended to lean more towards the fact that they were being terribly cheated by traders.

The group had been created by Jacqueline Tugume, an exasperated goat farmer herself. She was looking to connect with other farmers, in the hope of sharing ideas and helping each other solve the common problems, among which was better goat prices.

Tugume had been running a goat farm since 2007. As a stay-home mother, the goat farm was all she had as her personal source of income. But the middlemen had frustrated her without end for years. When she created the group, she was pleasantly surprised to find that all the other goat farmers were looking for ways of cutting off the middlemen.

For months, the conversation raged on. No one knew what to do. Members cried that no matter where you took your goats for sale, you were always boxed

6 places to find the right investor for your start-up

By Martin Zwilling, 13 May 2016

One of the biggest myths I have found in the entrepreneur community is that every startup needs one or more outside investors for credibility and success, and perhaps is even entitled to at least one. They don’t realize that according to statistics from, almost 60 percent are funded with personal savings and credit, and another 25 percent get their money from friends and family.

That leaves only about five percent that actually get their funding from investors, through crowdfunding, banks, angels, and venture capitalists. Of course, if you want to be in that number, or you want that number to go up, you have to know how to locate potential investors who fit your profile, requirements, and expectations.

I saw a good summary of the most effective ways to source prospective investors in a new book, “The Art of Startup Fundraising,” by Alejandro Cremades, who has been there and done that, both as an e
