Nine research projects funded to improve seed systems in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa

Nine projects are funded by NWO-WOTRO to strengthen the Netherlands-CGIAR research partnership on generating insights that contribute to improving seed systems in focus regions within Asia and Sub-Sahara Africa. Specific seed systems addressed are cassava, maize, groundnut, vegetables, cocoa, forage seed, tilapia and chicken, while some projects have a more general focus on improving the functioning and inclusiveness of seed systems and (actors in) markets.

The call on “Seed Systems Development: Enabling and Scaling Genetic Improvement and Propagation Materials” was released by the Netherlands-CGIAR partnership. The nine awarded project consortia consist of Dutch research institutes, CGIAR research centers (through CGIAR research programmes or platforms), and (local) partners from the public and private sector.

Evaluator concludes: SNV’s youth employment approach works.

Youth unemployment in many parts of Africa is soaring, and especially out of school youth in rural areas are a vulnerable group. SNV’s Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE) project realized employment for almost 16,000 young people, using a so called push-match-pull approach. Sixteen thousand young people, and every one of them stands for a person who started up their life and gained purpose. A final report by an independent evaluator has now confirmed that push-, match pull works. But, what is it? And why does it work?

Feeding Dar es Salaam: a symbiotic food system perspective

PhD Thesis by Marc C.A. Wegerif

Summary  (please find link to PDF version at bottom of article)

This thesis is a sociological analysis of the agri-food system that feeds most of the over four and a half million residents of the fast-growing city of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It is based on qualitative research that has generated a picture of the food system that supplies the important foods for the majority of residents of the city. The research took an actor orientated approach and started from urban eaters and then followed the food back through retailers, processors and transporters to the primary producers. Methodological lessons are derived from this process in particular the elaboration of the ‘ride-along’ as a research method. Foods followed include maize, rice, potatoes, green vegetables, eggs and milk. Other foods such as beef and chicken have also been touched on especially in relation to marketing and slaughtering oper

Tanzania and the East African Community: A comparative political economy

Cooksey, B. 2016. (Discussion Paper 186). Maastricht: ECDPM.

http://ecdpm.org/publications/tanzania-east-african-community-comparative-political-economy/

Key messages

•Tanzania has improved port efficiency, reduced the cost of transit trade and increased the export of manufactured goods to its neighbours in the EAC.

•But Tanzanian clearing and forwarding agents, travel and tourism companies and trades unions strongly resist deeper integration under the EAC Charter.

•Multiple non-tariff barriers further undermine regional trade, investment and service integration with Tanzania and Kenya the main offenders.

•To benefit from deeper regional integration, Tanzania needs to achieve greater international competitiveness, an improved business enabling environment and better logistics performance.

FADECO BIO-CROPS is a new initiative in Karagwe district, Kagera Region, NW Tanzania, that has embarked on production and dissemination of clean planting banana materials, addressing the devastating Banana Bacterial Wilt virus,  that has left the Kagera Region devoid of bananas- the staple food crop as well as biggest income earner.

FADECO BIO-CROPS is partnering witt 2 private sector biotechnology initiatives: BioCrops (U) ltd in Kampala and Crop Bio-science Solutions (T) Ltd in Arusha ,who both have plant genetic engineering capability.

I am looking for partners to work with to make this project a success. This project complements initial efforts to enhance livelihood security (improved household food security and incomes) of the people in Kagera region that have been undertaken by FADECO since 1993.

Seven districts in Kagera region (Bukoba, Biharamulo, Muleba, Karagwe, Ngara, Kyerwa and Misenyi) have have been hit by the Banana Bacterial disease (BXW). Almost 90 per cent of the entire
