Youth in Agribusiness Caravan 2018 ends on a high note!

The first ever agricultural caravan ended yesterday on a high note, participants calling for everyone’s renewed efforts to transform the agriculture sector from subsistence to commercially oriented farming.

In her closing remarks, AgriProFocus Rwanda country coordinator, Madam Sajji Ryakunze commended the resolutions that the up to 150 youth participating at the caravan made following the field visits at successful farmers’ farms.

“There’s no doubt this was a good platform to plot the way forward for the Rwanda young farmers. You all witnessed the good strides others are making in the agriculture besides learning the challenges facing small-scale farmers and ways in which these can be overcome,” Ms. Ryakunze said.

YNKURIJE Dorcas, Help a Child Rwanda beneficiary is a farmer from the Rusizi district and was one of the farmers who attended the youth caravan. After visiting the Sunripe farms Rwanda in Bugesera district, she wanted

USAID INNOVATIONS in FEED the FUTURE

1000000$

Due date : 12 October, 2018

Presentation of the donor

The U.S. Government, in partnership with other governments, civil society, multilateral development institutions, research institutions, universities, and the private sector, will build on experience to date through Feed the Future to address these challenges, take advantage of opportunities, and advance food security and improved nutrition by focusing efforts around three interrelated and interdependent objectives:

Inclusive and sustainable agricultural-led economic growth, as growth in the agriculture sector has been shown in some areas to be more effective than growth in other sectors at helping men and women lift themselves out of extreme poverty and hunger. It does this by increasing availability of food, generating income from production, creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities throughout value chains, and spurring growth in rural and urban economies.

Strengthened resilience among

Apply for the Young Women Transform Prize: Prizes of $15,000 to $35,000 to youth-led or youth-serving organizations in LMICs

Enabling Youth-Led Economic Empowerment

How to apply: here

Sector: Gender & Youth

Deadline: 30th April, 2018 Washington D.C. local time

The Challenge

The 1.8 billion young people in the world today represent the largest youth population in history. In many parts of the world, youth lack opportunities for education and meaningful employment; an estimated 21 percent of youth are neither employed nor enrolled in education or training opportunities leaving these youth disaffected and with little hope for their future prospects.

Youth unemployment disproportionally affects young women. Globally, only 37 percent of young women participate in the labor force, compared to 54 percent of young men. When young women are excluded from economic opportunities, gender inequality is reinforced and they are less able to invest in their own health, education and safety – and that

Affordability & Financing Models for the Smallholder Market

A playbook for enabling smallholder farmer customer uptake of products and services

June 2015, USAID and Fintrac

'Given the financing gap, and the fact that most farmer income is used to meet basic needs, businesses serving smallholder farmers must rely on innovative methods to enable customers to purchase products and services. Without doing so, companies risk having a limited market for their products and services.

In many cases, companies can couple these strategies with product and service delivery to offer a comprehensive solution that increases customer adoption.

This playbook will assist partners in understanding the variety and viability of the strategies available to help customers afford a product or service and will help them&nbsp

Staving off famine in Ethiopia

“We need to have a long-term perspective, because ... every three, four or five years, you’re going to have a major drought, which can set you back to zero,” Andrew Catley.

In an interview with Tufts Now, Andrew Catley gives insights on the efforts to tackle the current drought effects in Ethiopia and how future strategies should be. Andrew Cately is a research director at Tufts' Feinstein International Center who has been leading research projects in Ethiopia since 2005.

He described the response of the Ethiopian government in the following way: "The response of the Ethiopian government is, I think, widely seen as a success story. It seems they've now committed up to $700 million of their own money—saved thanks to lower oil prices—which is unprecedented. If we compare that to previous major droughts in 1984-1985 and 2002-2003, one of the things we're seeing is this huge government commitment and leadership. The government was the first major responde
