Agri-Hub Ethiopia organized another Agri-Finance Fair in Hawassa last Saturday 8 December. The fair was held with the aim of linking farmers to financial institutions and to sensitize farmers about value addition. This time, the fair was hosted by Hawassa University.
About 460 farmers and professionals attended the fair, which is twice the amount of participation of the first finance fair in October. They visited the 16 banks and MFIs who were exhibiting their financial products and attended the debate and learning sessions. One of the key issues raised during the debates and presentations was the limited possibilities for farming as a business within the current macro-economic climate. The difficulty of getting finance was also a point of debate. One of the exhibitors, Sidama MFI, presented their plans to open a micro-bank department in the coming 3 years to serve the missing middle: loans between 5,000 and 50,000 dollar.
Overall, the fair was a success. Farmers were able to get rel... Read more

(Y)our perspective on ‘Strengthening the agri-sector through skills development’
Recently, agriculture, food security and rural development have received more attention from development organisations, donor governments and international institutions. Also the need for investing in skills development in Africa has come back on the agenda. So far however, the link between the two has not been paid sufficient attention to.
Woord en Daad and Red een Kind, two Dutch members of Agri-ProFocus, organised an expert meeting in Kampala (3-5 October 2012) to specifically address this gap. Eighty participants from ten African countries attended the meeting and contributed to the debates. The Big Question was: how can we make skills training relevant for the agri-sector, so that smallholders start to run their farm as a business and reap the benefits of that?
Through this blog I want to share the outcomes of this important meeting.
The most important docume
One issue that came out during the APF Multi Stakeholder Meeting was the need to improve access to (value chain) finance.
Most APF members have something to offer in this regard, be it knowledge, services or finance. SNV, Cordaid, Woord en Daad, KIT and WUR feel that a series of practical workshops focused on access to finance can be concrete actions to implement the value chain specific action plans and/or to sharpen them further.
It will also be a good opportunity to start an action learning process.
Which type of finance for whom?
In all segments of the chain, there is need for a specific financial product, with a specific purpose.
I Producer Organisations (producers) need inputs before they start growing/ rearing their crop/ cattle and cash once their produce is ready. Possible ways of addressing the needs of the producers are:
¨ Self-finance by the producer organisation (e.g. by raising shares); +low costs, no collateral, - limited amo... Read more
