On September 11, the AgriProFocus network, in close collaboration with the F&BKP, facilitates the fourth Community of Practice (CoP) around Youth in Agribusiness and food systems, entitled “Youth, Employment and Migration – Understanding the relations between jobs, skilled youth and migration”. The aim is to exchange knowledge, share experiences and jointly contribute to innovative solutions for young people to become successful in agrifood sectors and to have their voices heard among decision makers.
Mitigating the root causes of migration dominates todays Dutch development policy. The assumption is that job creation and education in low income countries will prevent youth from moving to Europe. The tendency to frame development policies with the objective to ‘stop migration’ is international. The European Union released numerous calls for proposals which aim to reduce... Read more

We need to demystify the agribusiness ecosystem before we jump to advocacy and insistently calling youths to embrace agriculture. While working as a volunteer at AgriProFocus Kenya, where my interest in supporting agriculture has been nurtured over a year now, i learnt of this program Promoting Agribusiness Networking and Trade for Youth (PAINT-Y) they are launching soon; but i think there is need to understand Agribusiness Ecosystem before we dive into promoting this wonderful program.
Reading through Wilkin (2015) I discovered that if we have to promote agribusiness it is imperative to first define the disconnectedness and linkages that define an agribusiness ecosystem. According to Wilkins agribusiness does not only mean growing of commodities but involve processing, packaging, logistics and marketing agro-commodities. Therefore, there are vast opportunities in the agribusiness ecosystem that can be explo... Read more

Also in Ghana, moving to the city in search of work is the norm for rural youth. They don’t consider agriculture as a viable alternative source of livelihood and part of the reason is lack of access to land, knowledge, capital and financial services. To motivate young people to go into agriculture, for the past two and a half years, Solidaridad and its partners have implemented the MASO Programme to create employment opportunities for rural youth in the cocoa sector.
A Regional Youth Employment in Agriculture Conference took place from the 20th to 21st at Kigali Convention Centre. It was a two days event which brought together over 500 key stakeholders and young agripreneurs mainly from Africa, to foster an exchange among stakeholders (policy makers, development partners, the private sector, youth and women organizations, civil society organizations, research and academia) on knowledge and best practices regarding the interfaces between agriculture, youth employment, entrepreneurship, ICT innovations in agriculture and rural development, leading to prioritizing interventions going forward.
Deadline for receipt of proposals: Thursday, 11 October 2018 @ 6:00 P.M. Netherlands Time

The whole of last week we were celebrating youth week 2018 with a theme of creating safe space for youths that ended yesterday. I was unlucky because the list of those to attend the event at the United Nation Complex in Nairobi was full before they got to my name as an applicant. This did not dampen my spirit for i had the opportunity to follow through all the events that were happening world wide using social media tools. I created the hashtag #AgriSpaceSafe4Youths and used this to interact with fellow youths.
Having been a member of AgriProFocus Network for almost a year now, while reflecting on the conversations that took place concerning creation of safe space for young people especially in agribusiness, i remember a question that was paused to me during an interview with the AgriProFocus office in Nairobi “ According to you who is AgriProFocus?
To me " AgriProFocus is an investment bank with a vast repository of agribusine
The prestigious Pakasa Youth Awards, a national entrepreneurship competition is back, as Uganda continues to seek solutions to curb its high youth unemployment rate.
Launched in 2015, the Pakasa Youth Awards seek out exemplary young entrepreneurs from all over the country to honor.
The award aims at inspiring a change in mind-set among young people to regard entrepreneurship as a viable source of income, in the face of rampant youth unemployment.
The New Vision Editor-in-Chief Barbara Kaija says just like has been the case before, the Pakasa Youth Awards is not looking for young enterprising people who have made it.

The President was this afternoon addressing the National Youth Council meeting at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Conference Hall at Lugogo in Kampala.
“I want the youth to wake up so that we develop our country in order to come out of poverty and joblessness,”
President Museveni said. He asked the youth to familiarize themselves with the ideology and strategy of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) as this will make it easy for them and him to work together.
Museveni encouraged the young people to form groups and undertake different production activities with a view to adding value to products made locally in the country as a way of reducing import expenses.
