Unexpected farmer:

Meet our July Member of the month; Jimmy Ouni who never thought farming was for him but is now a successful agripreneur. Here are excerpts from Jimmy Ouni's Q&A.

My name is Jimmy Ouni and I am the Finance & SME Manager of Truism Holdings Limited. I originally had no interest in farming but my drive into agriculture came from “Imat Lucy”, an elderly woman I met in northern Uganda whilst working as a site foreman with Save the Children. Lucy, who was ill at the time, was selling off her land in order to seek medical attention. “Imat” is a respectful way of addressing the elderly in the Langi culture.

Meeting “Imat Lucy” during an on-site supervision role with Save the Children, Jimmy Ouni was rewarded with her 2.5acre piece of land for offering to pay off her medical bills.

Though Jimmy was not keen on practising farming on the land, “Imat Lucy” convinced and encouraged him to plough and plant on the land. Jimmy reluctantly obliged; not because he believed it cou

Mugisha Richard Congratulations Jimmy upon being a member of the month. I know Jimmy as a very committed youth with a positive attitude. Well motivated and enthusiastic. Jimmy is a student of the AgriProFocus Youth Caravan , a model that provides a platform for real life learning opportunities through strategic business exposures from youth led initiatives. Part of what Jimmy has been able to do, i'm sure was an inspiration he got from last year's youth caravan. "Seeing is believing". Always aspire to inspire others!

Youth Symposium urges Youth to exploit value chains in agribusiness:

On the occasion of THE 2018 National Youth Symposium, Uganda National Young Farmers Association (UNYFA) invited its partners within Uganda to a countrywide Youth Symposium. With the support of UNFFE, AVSI and UNYFA, the AgriProFocus Network in Uganda co-organized this Symposium Day on July 20th at the Source of the Nile in Jinja.

The central theme of the Symposium Day was ‘Youth in agribusiness for income generation and job creation.’ Many of the stakeholders at the Symposium recognise the important role of young women and men in realising a sustainable agri-food sector in the near future. They are also aware of the many challenges young people face as agripreneurs in the sector.

The Symposium thus focused on collaboration and sharing of experiences, debate forums amongst the youth; as important factors to inspire, increase synergy, to improve and be more effective in tackling challenges in convin

Agriculture Revolution would start from Villages: But would be aided by youths

My heart is full of hope after attending my inaugural Rural farmers Field days. The zeal and energy of the rural farmers is contagious. It can infect anyone who comes close, this for me is a sign of hope for the agriculture sector. Going forward we have to be determined to make this happen.

Why do I believe that Agriculture is going to work? One elderly man who dropped me at Kapsabet town from the Field day in Nandi profusely appreciated the effort portrayed by a number of young people like Rodgers Kirwa. He observed that young people are leading in taking agricultural talks to the village. He thinks that a movement of young people in agribusiness is in the oving so long as those leading this crusade never cease or give up. For me, this was a confirmation of my conviction that our generation has the ability and responsibility to transform our countries.

I am persuaded by my passion that I have a greater role to p

Evaluator concludes: SNV’s youth employment approach works.

Youth unemployment in many parts of Africa is soaring, and especially out of school youth in rural areas are a vulnerable group. SNV’s Opportunities for Youth Employment (OYE) project realized employment for almost 16,000 young people, using a so called push-match-pull approach. Sixteen thousand young people, and every one of them stands for a person who started up their life and gained purpose. A final report by an independent evaluator has now confirmed that push-, match pull works. But, what is it? And why does it work?

Youth to benefit from national agriculture show:

Several youth are to benefit from source of the Nile national agriculture show which is to be officially launched today by President Museveni in Jinja District, minister Vincent Bamulangaki has said. This is the 26th show to be hosted in Uganda.

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja said yesterday that government’s mission is to transform agriculture from being pre-dominantly subsistence to commercial for food security, increased household incomes and promoting exports.

‘’We recognize the need to empower sector players especially the youth with Knowledge of opportunities along the value chain, including value addition and marketing from which one can earn income without going to the farm because most of the young people in Uganda are unemployed. So we are sure that they will learn a lot from this show,’’ he said.

He further noted that since 80 percent of the households are engaged in agriculture, there are

Young innovators develop solar-powered technology to manage farming remotely

Farmers will be able to manage farming practices such as effective irrigation of their crops without necessarily being at their farms thanks to a solar-powered technology developed by Rwandan young innovators.

The technology uses solar-fueled sensors and irrigation to collect data on soil moisture, nutrient needs and water needed to foster crop growth.

It is in line with a project of Precise Agriculture (PA), a modern farming management model using digital techniques to monitor and optimise agricultural production processes that the innovators, members of the Kicukiro District-based STES Group, a company which was founded by technical innovators and researchers, have undertaken. Access to correct financial information would accelerate agribusiness in Kenya: Lessons From SNV partners Day

“Romance without Finance has no chance”  This quote from Rodger Frank founder of innovara captured the mood and theme of the SNV Partners day event. To me the quote explains why young people have shunned away from agriculture. From the era of our grandparents, agriculture in Africa was considered what Dr. Akinwumi Adesina calls a social sector. It was only good for keeping the family going as children were encouraged to go to school work hard get job probably in the City in order to save the family from poverty. This thinking contributed greatly to the state of affairs in the Agriculture sector.

Young people including myself deserve a better life hence the fear of engaging in what has been termed non productive social sector -Agriculture , we have to make money to sustain a family otherwise we are condemned to eternal agony of poverty. Therefore, for young people
