All the nutrients in our food originally come from the soil. In order to create healthy crops full of nutrients, farmers need to work with healthy soil.

If you're a home gardener wanting to increase your garden's yield, organic materials may not always be practical, so knowing how to use commercial (also known as synthetic or chemical) fertilizer correctly and with care may be your best option. Here is some help on how to use these powerful chemicals wisely.

Fertilizer helps plants grow to be stronger, healthier and bigger. There are many ways to make your own fertilizer, from all-purpose recipes to simple household products that can naturally boost nutrient levels in your soil.

Soils naturally contain many nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous, calcium, and potassium. These nutrients allow plants to grow. When soil nutrients are missing or in short supply, plants suffer from nutrient deficiency and stop growing. When the nutrient level is too lo

Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Agribussiness

In many countries across the world, food systems are changing fast, interlinked with the dynamics of population growth and urbanization. At the same time, the largest number of young people ever is growing up. Youth, particularly in low and middle income countries, struggle to find decent jobs, make the transition from education to work and mature in terms of independence. Young people should have the opportunity to fully participate in the economy especially in areas where agriculture is the main sector. Young people increasingly do not see farming as a viable livelihood for the future and tend to migrate to other (urban) areas.

A shaking up of the sector is needed to engage youth in its future development. Entrepreneurship and innovation are key in making this connection. Young people have the potential to find profitability and promise in doing things differently: they can link food markets, develop new food products with added value and new

Apply for the Young Women Transform Prize: Prizes of $15,000 to $35,000 to youth-led or youth-serving organizations in LMICs

Enabling Youth-Led Economic Empowerment

How to apply: here

Sector: Gender & Youth

Deadline: 30th April, 2018 Washington D.C. local time

The Challenge

The 1.8 billion young people in the world today represent the largest youth population in history. In many parts of the world, youth lack opportunities for education and meaningful employment; an estimated 21 percent of youth are neither employed nor enrolled in education or training opportunities leaving these youth disaffected and with little hope for their future prospects.

Youth unemployment disproportionally affects young women. Globally, only 37 percent of young women participate in the labor force, compared to 54 percent of young men. When young women are excluded from economic opportunities, gender inequality is reinforced and they are less able to invest in their own health, education and safety – and that

Opportunities presented in Kenya Youth Agribusiness Strategy, 2017-2021

In Kenya youth unemployment is higher than the overall national unemployment rate. While the latter is around 10% it goes as high as 35% for youth, depending on the age group. According to the UNDP study, 80% of the currently 2.3 million unemployed are young people between 15 and 34 years (World Bank, 2014).

Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya’s economy, directly contributing 24% of the annual GDP and another 27% indirect contribution (ASDS, 2010 – 2020). The sector is therefore critical in creating employment and improving living standards of Kenyans. It’s against this background that Agriculture has been identified as one of the key sectors to deliver the 10 per cent annual economic growth rate envisaged in the economic pillar of the Kenya Vision 2030. This growth can be achieved through transforming small-scale agriculture from subsistence to innovative, commercially oriented and modern agriculture.

Opinion: We can make agricultural work attractive for Africa's youth. Here's how: By Esther Ngumi

In Zimbabwe, it is hard to sell agriculture as a meaningful career for the youth. To them, the cities hold more promise than the fields. Similarly, in Kenya, many youths would rather migrate to the cities than stay in the rural areas to pursue a career in agriculture. They have real reasons to back their choice: Agriculture can be tedious, labor intensive, a risky business, unrewarding, and unproductive. Further, many cannot afford to raise the capital needed to secure land and other equipments and inputs needed to launch a successful and thriving agribusiness.

Yet, there are many success stories coming from Africa of successful youth agripreneurs, who, despite the above hurdles have used their skills, creativity, and innovation and leveraged on technology to build strong, thriving agribusinesses. They are making a career out of agriculture.

In Nigeria, for example, Angel Adelaja, has built a succe
