Youth needs to be involved in agriculture, to create employment, build up livelihood opportunities and engage in community development. We all agree. The assumption is that youth can act as change makers within their communities. There is a host of interventions to support them, from developing their skills to getting them organised. Despite, barriers persist for young people to succeed in agriculture. However, what do we know about how young people organise themselves and try to change food systems and how they work? There is much we can learn from youth here, from the diversity, the creativity and the organisational approaches through which they work and contri... Read more

Ruyaa is a youth farmers organisation operating in western uganda but currently in kamwenge and ibanda districts. The association aims to create a platform to share common experiences about problems and apportunities in farming.
All the nutrients in our food originally come from the soil. In order to create healthy crops full of nutrients, farmers need to work with healthy soil.
If you're a home gardener wanting to increase your garden's yield, organic materials may not always be practical, so knowing how to use commercial (also known as synthetic or chemical) fertilizer correctly and with care may be your best option. Here is some help on how to use these powerful chemicals wisely.
Fertilizer helps plants grow to be stronger, healthier and bigger. There are many ways to make your own fertilizer, from all-purpose recipes to simple household products that can naturally boost nutrient levels in your soil.
Soils naturally contain many nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous, calcium, and potassium. These nutrients allow plants to grow. When soil nutrients are missing or in short supply, plants suffer from nutrient deficiency and stop growing. When the nutrient level is too lo... Read more

In many countries across the world, food systems are changing fast, interlinked with the dynamics of population growth and urbanization. At the same time, the largest number of young people ever is growing up. Youth, particularly in low and middle income countries, struggle to find decent jobs, make the transition from education to work and mature in terms of independence. Young people should have the opportunity to fully participate in the economy especially in areas where agriculture is the main sector. Young people increasingly do not see farming as a viable livelihood for the future and tend to migrate to other (urban) areas.
A shaking up of the sector is needed to engage youth in its future development. Entrepreneurship and innovation are key in making this connection. Young people have the potential to find profitability and promise in doing things differently: they can link food markets, develop new food products with added value and new... Read more

How to apply: here
Sector: Gender & Youth
Deadline: 30th April, 2018 Washington D.C. local time
The 1.8 billion young people in the world today represent the largest youth population in history. In many parts of the world, youth lack opportunities for education and meaningful employment; an estimated 21 percent of youth are neither employed nor enrolled in education or training opportunities leaving these youth disaffected and with little hope for their future prospects.
Youth unemployment disproportionally affects young women. Globally, only 37 percent of young women participate in the labor force, compared to 54 percent of young men. When young women are excluded from economic opportunities, gender inequality is reinforced and they are less able to invest in their own health, education and safety – and that... Read more
