YOUTH IN AGRIBUSINESS CARAVAN:

Day 5 : 23RD AUGUST, 2017

VISIT TO MUBUKU IRRIGATION SCHEME IN KASESE DISTRICT

The caravan team traveled to Mubuku Irrigation Scheme in Kasese district. The area around Mubuku Irrigation Scheme receives little and unreliable rainfall and because it is close to the equator, its low altitude makes the temperature relatively high. Objectives

· To explore food production throughout the seasons using farrow irrigation system.

Discussions/ Interactions

Mr. James Nabulu, the supretendant of Mubuku Irrigation Scheme told caravan participants that the scheme currently works with 160 farmers who operate on 8 acres of land each under a land tenancy system. He encouraged the youth to join cooperative and associations in order to bargain for favorable prices on the market.

The youth also had the opportunity to tour the scheme and to experience a number of maize farmers working together to

Humphrey Mutaasa The reason why Gender has not been appreciated in Agribusiness development even though it is a very key ingredient, Its in the way it is packaged  and how it is promoted and by who. Men being the creatures they are need better packaging and involving them just like it has started being done. It shouldnt be mis-understood that its a women thing to take away the leadership and asset ownership component from the men. but rather together developing a livelihood.

Youth in Agribusiness Strategy Meeting:

In our new Global strategy, Youth is among the critical thematic areas the network would like to be more engaged in. As a way to enhance that, some of our youth in agribusiness thematic facilitators met in Nairobi last year November to develop our direction as a network on youth engagement in agribusiness. The objective of this meeting was to clearly define our approach on youth in agribusiness within the new strategy .Through sharing of experiences we have encountered in our countries in the past, we were able to develop a strategy on youth in agribusiness that includes well defined objectives (overall and specific) and a number of flagship projects. The flagship projects included Learning labs, Youth Caravan and Mapping.

Do we have Youth Caravan for Agribusiness Event scheduled  in Tanzania? It is a good learning approach

Hilda Okoth Dear Carolyn, AgriProFocus has a Youth in Agribusiness innovation community that aims at helping the youth engage in the sector. The group usually organizes events such as youth roadshow (Caravan) and youth B2B meeting. Tentatively, we are looking at having a roadshow in April and other events either in September or November. We will surely let you know, through this platform more details of these events.
